Aug. 26, 1906-July 5, 2001

MARSHALLTOWN-Mary L. Walter, 94, of Marshalltown, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Villa del Sol Health Center in Marshalltown. Services will be held at Chester Friends Church in Union, Saturday, July 7, at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Linda Garrison of Chester Friends Church officiating with burial at Chester Cemetery in Union. A memorial fund has been established.

Mary was born Aug. 26, 1906, in rural Union, to John P. and Effie C. Hadley Brindle. She was raised in the Hardin and Grundy county areas, graduating from Conrad High School. She attended Iowa State and Drake universities. On June 17, 1927, she was married to Paul M. Walter in rural Conrad. They farmed in the area until retirement to Marshalltown where they resided at the Embers. Mary moved to Villa del Sol in 1997. She was an active member of the Chester Friends Church. She was a member of Spinning Wheel Chapter DAR, Open Fire Chapter, Eldora, and Strawberry River Club in Arkansas, Iowa Ladies Legislative League, Iowa Council Republican Women, 4-H leader in Hardin and Grundy counties, Women's Farm Bureau, Homemakers' Club, Iowa Federation of Women's Club, Extension Council and several gem and mineral clubs.

Survivors include her daughters, Darlene Williams of New Providence, and Marilyn Stover-Eittreim of Conrad; a brother, Luther Brindle of Marshalltown; sister-in-law, Gladys Brindle of Conrad; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother; and a sister.

Biersborn Funeral Home in Union was in charge of the arrangements.
