FALLBROOK, Calif.- Bessie (Betty) Balvanz, 80, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Brooke Road Elder Care in Fallbrook, Calif. A memorial service will be held in Fallbrook.

Betty was born on Aug. 10, 1920, to Charles M. and Rachel A. Lyon in Alden. She attended Racine Country School and graduated from Alden High School in 1939. She married Fred E. Balvanz on May 7, 1952, and the couple settled in the area around National City/Chula Vista, Calif. She was a homemaker and a volunteer auxiliary worker for Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista for over 25 years. She enjoyed crocheting baby afghans.

Survivors include her husband, Fred; a sister Helen A. Hoffman of Iowa Falls; three nieces, Sylvia Ginoza and husband, Dennis, of Fallbrook, Joyce Schager and husband, Robert, of Alden, and Bonnye Ryan and husband, James, of Clear Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roland J. Lyon, and two sisters, Thelma Slaven and Marjorie Ackerman.
