ACKLEY-Verjean Lois Arends, 73, of Ackley, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 21, at 10:30 a.m., at Faith Presbyterian Church in Ackley, with burial in the East Friesland Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley, with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m.

Verjean was born Oct. 3, 1927, in Eldora, to Earnest and Lois Cross Gunn. She was a 1945 graduate of Owasa High School and attended Ellsworth College to study education and play basketball. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. On July 25, 1948, she married Donald G. Arends at the Owasa Methodist Church. Verjean taught country school at Ellis Township south of Iowa Falls. She was active in 4-H for over 40 years, both as a member and leader. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, traveling, cheering for high school and college sports and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a charter member of Faith Presbyterian Church rural Ackley.

Survivors include her husband, Donald, of Ackley; a son, Brian and his wife, Diane, of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Anita and her husband, Mark Adkins, of Ames; four grandchildren; and a sister, Marilyn and her husband, Dale Petty, of Eldora. Preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Bruce; two brothers, John Gunn and Marlyn Gunn.

Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley, is in charge of arrangements.
