James Dale Carothers was born October 13, 1878 at Kimb​​olton, Guernsey, Ohio​ ​to George Patterson ​Ca​rothers and Emma In​gra​m. Moved with his parents to Garner, Hancock, Iowa.

Married Dilla M​ae ​Quintas December 11, 19​07 at Garner, Hancock, I​owa.
They had 3 children:
Verna B. (born October 29, 1909 Garner, IA, married Claude Herman Veeder February 12, 1935 Garner, IA, died April 1972 Belmond, Wright, IA);

Velva Lilliane (born July 6, 1912 Garner, IA, married Willis D Niederfrank October 16, 1939 Garner, IA, died May 2, 1991 Mason City, Cerro Gordo, IA) and

Charles Dale (born February 24, 1916 Garner, IA, married Adeline Francis Greimann June 19, 1938 Garner, IA, died September 22, 1996 Rochester, MN).

Found in the 1880 census at Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio: George P. Carothers 29, Emma Carothers 23, Sarah E. Carothers 4, John H. Carothers 3, James D. Carothers 1, Rocilla J. Carothers 3m.

1888 spring: moved to Garner, Hancock, Iowa with parents.

Found in the 1895, 1900, 1905, 1910, 1920, 1925, 1930 censuses at Garner, Concord, Hancock, IA: 1895: James Carothers age 16.

1900: living with his uncle James Ingram: James Ingram 46, Minnie Ingram 36, William H Ingram 5, Christana Ingram 0/12, James Caruthers 21, Ettie Caruthers 16.

1910: James Carothers 31, Dilla Carothers 21, Verna Carothers 5/12.

1920: James 41, born Ohio, ran a medicine wagon. Wife Dilla, 31, her parents were from Illinois, Verna Carothers 10, Velva Carothers 7, Charles Carothers 3[3 10/12].

1925: James Carother 46, Dilla Carothers 36, Verna Carothers 14, Velva Carthers 11, Charles Carothers 8.

1930: James Corothers 51, Dilla Corothers 41, Verna Corothers 20, Velma Corothers 17, Charles Corothers 14.

Found in the Mason City Globe Gazette newspaper: July 30, 1938: "James Carothers of Garner, IA Dies at Home" - James Carothers, 59, died at his home here on Friday. He had been ill several weeks. Had lived in Garner, Iowa most of his life. Survived by wife, Dilla Quintas Carothers, 3 children, 2 brothers and seven sisters.

James Dale Carothers died​ July 29, 1938 at Ga​rner,​ Hancock, IA. ​​Buried at the Concord Cemetery, Garner, Hancock, IA.

James Carothers of Garner Dies at Home

Garner - James Carothers, 59, died at his home here Friday following an illness of several weeks. He had lived in Garner most of his life, and is survived by his wife Dillie Quintus Carothers at home and a son Charles, two brothers and seven sisters.

Funeral Services Will Be Conducted for Garner man Tuesday

Garner - Funeral services for James Carothers, 59, will be held at Zion Reformed church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of the Rev. William Huenemann.

He had been a resident of Hancock county for more than 50 years. He was married to Miss Dillie Quintus of Garner and they celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary several months ago.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters and one son. The daughters are Mrs. Claude Vadder of Belmond and Miss Velva Carothers at home and the son is Charles of Garner. Also surviving are seven sisters and two brothers, John of Garner and William of Wisconsin Dells, Wis.; the sisters are Mrs. Bert Groesbeck of Brigsdale Colo.; Mrs. William Badker of Mason City; Mrs. E. Badker of Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. James Malcy, Reynolds, Nebr.; Mrs. Homer Young of Algona; Mrs. Earl Eckerson, Clark, S. Dak., and Mrs. Albert Lade of near Garner.
