John Hamilton Carothers was born at Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio to George Patterson Carothers and Emma Ingram. He was the second of eleven children. His family moved to Garner, Hancock, Iowa.

He met and married Bertha Schleusner on February 24, 1903 at Garner, Hancock, Iowa.

The couple had 6 children:
Evalyne (born April 4, 1904, married Quentin Victor Stille March 21, 1925 Iowa, died April 22, 1950 Iowa);

Blanche Odessa (born January 18, 1906 Garner, Hancock, Iowa, married Willard Dale Tyler 1925, died January 30, 1981 Mason City, Cerro Gordo, IA);

Golda Margaret (born October 12, 1908 Garner, IA, married Gilbert F Jones September 29, 1928 Rowan, Wright, IA, died February 26, 1988 Sibley, Osceola, IA);

Maurice John (born March 4, 1914 Garner, IA, died March 9, 1982 Los Angeles, California);

Joy Ruby (born 1920 Garner, IA, married Ernest Sheets); and

Robert Wayne (born October 5, 1921 Garner, IA, died November 1, 1990 Austin, Mower, MN).

About 200 friends and relatives attended the open house held at the Hull Dining Room in honor of Mr and Mrs John Carothers' Golden Wedding Anniversary. This event was planned by the children and all were present. They are: Mr and Mrs W D Tyler of Mason City, Mr and Mrs Gilbert Jones of Klemme, Mr and Mrs Maurice Carothers of Bellflower, California, Mr and Mrs Ernest Sheetz of Ventura and Wayne Carothers of Garner. In the receiving line, beside the couple were John's brother and five sisters: William Carothers of Edgerton, Wisconsin; Mrs Bert Groebeck of Pierce, Colorado, Mrs James Maley of Ft Collins, Colorado; Mrs Will Badker of Mason City, IA, Mrs Albert Lade and Mrs Homer Young of Garner.
