1905-1987

A "Service of Remembrance" was held for Mrs. Edith Brewster, 82, of Britt, who died Monday, Dec. 7, 1987 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with Rev. J. Larry Vallery as officiant. Mrs. Brewster had donated her body to the University of Iowa's Medical Science Program.

Burial will be at a future date in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Cataldo Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Edith Charlotte Brewster, the daughter of Shannon and Augusta (Stock) Wright, was born March 7, 1905 at Britt. After graduating from Britt High School in 1923, she attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, where she received her Elementary Teacher's Certificate. From 1925 to 1936, she taught second grade in the elementary school in Aurelia.

June 27, 1936, she was married to Dr. Calvin O. Brewster at Albert Lea, MN. They lived in Britt where Dr. Brewster practiced his medical profession, until his death, in August of 1962. Mrs. Brewster continued to live in Britt until the time of her death.

Mrs. Brewster had studied considerably about the life and philosophy of Abraham Lincoln and could be considered an authority on his life from the time of his birth, until he left Springfield, IL with his family. She possessed a fine library of books, about, and by, Abraham Lincoln, and also much Lincoln memorabilia.

Mrs. Brewster was intensely interested in education; concerned that each child be given a fair and equal opportunity to obtain the schooling they needed. During her life-time, Mrs. Brewster had helped educate more than seventeen students, by paying, all, or a major portion of their tuition, in order that they might receive their college training and degree. She had made provision for a Scholarship Fund to be established at the Britt High School.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Hancock County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Federated Woman's Club, the Hancock County Historical Society and Chapter GF, P.E.O., of which she was also past-president.

She is survived by her niece, Mrs. Joy Wright Chance of Falls Church, VA and three nephews, Vernon Wright of Waterloo, Darrell Wright of Waterloo and Merritt Wright of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Calvin O. Brewster in August of 1962; her parents; her sister, Sadie Wright; and her brothers, Lucian L. Wright, George S. Wright and a brother who died in infancy.
