Herman Edwin Schaefer, the son of Rudolph and Minnie (Storck) Schaefer, was born July 23, 1911 on a farm near Sheffield. He received his education in the rural schools near Sheffield. In 1934, he moved with his family to a farm north of Wesley where he farmed with his parents and also did custom corn shelling.

February 14, 1939, he married Alice A. H. Tegtmeyer at First Lutheran Church in Britt. They lived with his parents for 13 months and then moved northeast of Wesley where they farmed until 1948, when they moved northwest of Britt. In 1966, they moved north of Britt, across from the Britt Golf course. In 1982, they retired from active farming and in 1991, moved into Britt. He had delivered motor homes for Winnebago Industries.

Herman and Alice had spent their winters in Weslaco, TX. His joy was traveling in their motor home and time spent with family and friends. He was a handyman who enjoyed "tinkering" in his machine shop!

He was a member of First Lutheran Church where he had served on the Planning Committee and Building Committee for the new church. He belonged to the Farmer's Britt Co-op where he had served on the board. He was also a Britt Township Trustee for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Schaefer of Britt; three daughters, Mrs. Maxine Boekelman and her husband, Harold of Britt and their two children, Mrs. Ramona Jacobson and her husband, Michael, and their three children, Jennifer, Marcus and Megan and Paul Boekelman, Mrs. Beverly Cataldo and her husband, Dean of Garner, and their children, Brian, Brent and Kristine, and Mrs. Doris Boekelman and her husband, George of Britt, and their children, Mrs. Sandy Young and her husband, Terry, and their children Michael and Susie; his brother, Clarence Schaefer and his wife, Carrie of Britt; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Alene Schaefer of Rockwell.
