Services for Wilmer R. Frein, 67, of Garner who died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1993 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. John W. Hemann as celebrant. Mary Lou Nedved was lector. Mass servers were Thomas Whitehurst, Jonathan Winter and Brian Garland.

Mrs. Ronald Kumsher was organist and accompanied the St. Boniface Choir. Ushers were Dale Upmeyer and Robert Kral.

Honorary bearers were grandchildren Thomas Whitehurst, Karl Lunning, Molly Lunning, Cody Lunning, Jill Nedved, Kim Nedved, Laura Nedved, Jonathan Winter, Holly Winter and Jesse Winter.

Active bearers were Scot Whitehurst, Randy Rayhons, Scott Rayhons, Brad Frein, James Frein and Chuck Frein.

Graveside military were conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Burial was in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner. A rosary by the St. Boniface Men's Society and a Scriptural Wake Service were held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner Monday evening.

Wilmer Reynold Frein, the son of Joe and Julia (Hemann) Frein, was born September 28, 1925 at Stacyville. After attending the rural schools of Mitchell County he worked for the Wagner family. He served his country in the U.S. Army from July of 1944 to June of 1946, seeing action in the Philippians. Wilmer was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

September 13, 1949, he married Arlene Rose Rayhons at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They farmed northwest of Garner for five years and then moved south of Forest City. In January of 1961, they moved into Garner. Wilmer was employed by Hancock County as a drainage foreman, until he retired in 1985 due to ill health. He enjoyed his family, woodworking, fishing and caring for his lawn.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Boniface Men's Society and the Garner V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene Frein of Garner; four daughters, all Garner, Susan Whitehurst and her sons, Scot and Thomas, Joyce Lunning and her husband, Norman and their children, Kari, Molly and Cody, Mary Lou Nedved and her husband, Arlyn and their children, Jill Kim and Laura and Judy Winter and her husband, Stephen and their children, Jonathan, Holly and Jesse; his mother, Mrs. Julia Frein of Osage; two sisters, Mary Alice Merrick of Osage and Pat Ahrens and her husband, Don of Mason City; four brothers, Dick Frein and his wife, Elaine of Garner, Bill Frein and his wife, Alice of Des Moines, Marvin "Bud" Frein of Minneapolis. MN and Bob Frein and his wife, Marlene of Osage; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Frein of Forest City.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Ann Marie Whitehurst; his father, Joe Frein, an infant sister, Ruth Ann Frein; and four brothers, Don Frein, Jerome Frein, Harry Frein and Dean Frein.
