Services held Saturday for George Orvick, 84

Funeral services for George Orvick, 84, were held Saturday morning at Forest Evangelical Lutheran church in Forest City with The Rev. John Shep officiating.

Mr. Orvick died last Wednesday at New Oaks Care Center in Des Moines after a lengthy illness.

Casket bearers for the service were Blaine Field, Brad Field, Kent Hauge, Daniel Orvick, James Orvick and Mark Orvick. The Rev. Alf Merseth was soloist and Mrs. John Shep, organist.

Interment was at Madison township cemetery with Olson-Petersen Funeral Home in charge arrangements.

Mr. Orvick was born Aug. 14, 1890, near Haugesund, Norway, the son of Sjur Villumsen Aarvik and his wife, Marta. After his school days, he worked as a fisherman on the North Sea. He came to the United States at the age of 17, settling in Humboldt county.

He married Mabel Mandsager March 19, 1917, at Humboldt and the couple farmed in Humboldt, Worth and Franklin counties. They moved to a farm near Miller in 1949 and farmed until their retirement in 1955. In 1963, Mr. Orvick was able to return to visit his homeland for the first time. His wife died in 1971.

Mr. Orvick was an active member of Forest Evangelical Lutheran church.

He is survived by four children: Sherman Orvick of Des Moines, Mrs. Marlin (Eileen) Field of Joice, the Rev. George Orvick of Madison, Wis., and Hubert Orvick of Forest City. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Sig Orvick of Elmore, Minn., and Lars Orvick of Stavanger, Norway; and three sisters, Jennie, Martha and Dena, all of Stavanger, Norway.
