Forest Citian died unexpectedly Saturday

Former Forest City businessman, Peter D. Etzen, 58, died unexpectedly Saturday at the Forest City community hospital. Etzen had suffered a massive coronary attack at his home and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Peter D. Etzen, the son of Peter and Mary Barth Etzen, was born April 17, 1920, at Hayfield. He received his education in the Hayfield school and worked on area farms until he was 16 years old. He was then employed at the Forest City Grist Mill until 1976, except for serving in the United States Army during World War II. In 1976 he joined Winnebago Industries.

He married Eunice Wilson June 29, 1941, in Garner. She died Sept. 18, 1967. He then married Edna Coyle Aug. 8, 1969.

Etzen was a member of the United Methodist church, the IOOF Lodge of Forest City and the Forest City American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Mrs. Joe (Linda) Lagasse of Garner, Mrs. Larry (Sandra) Saathoff of Provo, Utah, and Scott of Forest City; three step-children, Larry Coyle of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Jerome (Judy) Millett and Mrs. Charles (Donna) Todd, both of Waterloo; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two brothers, Enno and Edward Etzen, both of Forest City; and five sisters, Mrs. Rose Peterson, and Mrs. Irene Cook, both of Forest City, Mrs. Grace Larson of Dougherty, Mrs. Berndetta Brackey of Northwood and Mrs. Raymond (Louise) Hanson of LeRoy, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and a brother, John.

Funeral services for Etzen were held Tuesday at the Forest City United Methodist church with the Rev. James Louk officiating.

Mrs. Robert Goranson was soloist and Mrs. Franklin Bienert, organist. Honorary pall bearers were Melvin A. Anderson, Everett Leach and Ralph Juhl. Casket bearers were Art Bowman, Clarence V. Johnson, Merle Sorensen, Stanley Thompson, Harry Tjelta, and Duane Vrieze. Flag presentation was made by the Forest City American Legion Post No. 121. Burial was in Madison Township cemetery with the Petersen funeral home in charge of arrangements.
