John E. Humphrey
1909-1999

Services for John E. Humphrey, 90, of Garner who passed away Sunday, July 18, 1999 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake were held Wednesday, July 21 at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating.

Music was provided by organist, Doreen Johnson who accompanied soloist, Cindy Schubert and congregational hymns. Ushers were Marvin and Maynard Schoneman.

Casket bearers were Jeffrey Schaefer, Scott Dodd, David Jass, Michael Humphrey, Dan Gilbert, Robert Dodd, Rodney Dodd and Steven Dodd.

Interment was at Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.

John Edward Humphrey, the son of John Edward and Lola (Strouse) Humphrey, was born January 19, 1909 on a farm near Fertile. He graduated from Fertile High School as Valedictorian in 1927. He worked for various farmers in the Fertile area.

On August 27, 1930, he was married to Helen Seglem at the Humphrey home in Fertile. In the spring of 1931, they began farming southeast of Garner. They retired from farming in 1970 and moved into Garner. They spent family vacations at Many Point Lake in Minnesota for thirty years. John enjoyed his family, fishing, card playing and all facets of farming.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men's Club, was on the Administrative Board and had served on various church committees. He also served on the ASCS Board, Ell Township Election Board and the Ell Township School Board.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Humphrey; five children, Verneil Quintus and her husband, Jerry, of Garner, Carol Jass and her husband, Dick, of Mason City, John Wendell Humphrey and his wife, Linda, of Centerville, IA, Linda Gilbert and her husband, Gary, of Fulton, IL and Dudley Humphrey of Mason City; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Reta Schaefer in 1974; a son-in-law, Robert Dodd in 1990; grandson, Bradley Ray Humphrey, September 1, 1995; a granddaughter, Roxanne Rene Dodd, August 14, 1956; three sisters, May Larsen, Nellie Loats, and Barbara Robison; and a brother, Jasper Humphrey.
