John Gatchel
1916-1996

Services for John Gatchel, 79, of Garner, who died Wednesday, June 12, 1996, at his home in Garner, were held Saturday, June 15, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with Rev. Robert T. Ellis as officiant.

Mrs. Richard Johnson, organist, accompanied Loren Kalkwarf, soloist. Ushers were Marvin Schoneman and Maynard Schoneman.

Honorary casket bearers were James Gatchel and Gene Tannahill.

Active bearers were Gene Sankey, Art Hejlik, Scott Botten, Raymond Kumsher, Russell Imoehl and Larry Stayner.

Burial was at Concord Cemetery in Garner with Cataldo Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

John Cecil Gatchel, the son of John T. and Ivy May (Thorne) Gatchel, was born December 4, 1916, on a farm near Britt. He attended school in Britt. In the spring of 1933, the family moved east of Garner and continued farming. After graduating from Garner High in 1937, he farmed with his father.

May 4, 1941, he married Pearl D. Jorgensen at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. They farmed east of Garner until 1972, when he began working for the Farmer's Cooperative Society. After retiring in 1982, he enjoyed "stopping in" and visiting at the coop. John enjoyed reading, horses, nature programs on TV and visiting with family and friends.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Men's Breakfast Club.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl Gatchel of Garner; three children, Gloria Barney and special friend, David Strasburger of Phoenix, AZ, Karen Baack of Oskaloosa, and Roger Gatchel and his wife, Barbara of Lakeville, MN; eight grandchildren, Debbie Oswald, Kristine Barney, Lance Barney, Scott Botten, Laura Botten, Kimberly Johnson, Amber Gatchel and Jill Gatchel; 10 great-grandchildren; his sisters and brother, Doris Claude of Garner, James Gatchel and his wife, Kathryn of Garner, and Emma Lou Stayner and her husband, Lynn of Hampton; sisters-in-law, Robertine Gatchel of Garner and Rosemary Tannahill and her husband, Gene of Fertile; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Eric John Botton; his parents; a brother, Clarence Gatchel; a sister, Eva Kumsher; and two brothers-in-law.
