William Evans, 71

Services for William Evans, 71, of Garner, who died Sunday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. Msgr. Roger O'Brien as celebrant.

George Schmidt will serve as lector. Mrs. Ronald Kumsher, organist, will accompany the church choir. Ushers will be Elmer Urich and Duane Severson.

Honorary bearers are Sylvan Hugelen, E.F. Boc, R.E. Aukes, Vern Butz, John Hauptman, Herman Becker, Harold Quintus and Maurice Studer. Active bearers will be E.D. Buntenbach, Kermit Greiman, Michael Connor, Paul Barr, Tom Schmidt and Steve Olsen. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner. Parish rosary was held at Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

William Finley Evans, the son of Lloyd H. and Isabelle (Finley) Evans was born March 29, 1912 at DeKalb, Ill. He moved with his family to the Buffalo Center and Fertile areas where he attended school. In 1929 he began work as a pressman at the Mason City Globe Gazette in Mason City.

October 31, 1935 he married Esther Johnson at Mason City. In 1937 he took up flying and later directed civil pilot training at Mason City and Omaha. In 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army Enlisted Reserve where he instructed students in primary flight in the U.S. Air Corps at Cuero, Tx.

In 1942, Bill and his family moved back to Mason City where he was flight instructor at the Mason City Airport. In January of 1946 he became manager of the Garner Airport where he gave student instruction, repaired aircraft and was involved in agricultural spraying. He was semi-retired at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner; the American Bonanza Society and the OX5 Club.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; two daughters: Mrs. Charles (Mary Ann) Watson of Windsor, Conn. and Mrs. James (Shirley) Dumont of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Larry (Pamela) (Evans) Hitzhusen of Sioux City; six grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Evans and his wife, Irene, of Savanna, Ill.; eight sisters: Sister M. Susan Evans, B.V.M. of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Carl (Ruth) Weise of Tempe, Ariz., Mrs. Clayton (Grace) Walrod of Vancouver, Br. Co.; Mrs. B.R. (Shirley) Barr of Mason City, Mrs. William (Ann) Parker of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. William (Patricia) Deibold of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. F.E. (Bernadette) Fitzsimmons of St. Joseph, Mich. and Mrs. Jeanne C. Herring of San Francisco, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his son, Donald in 1970; his parents; and an infant sister, Helen Rae Evans.
