Hayfield Resident Called Suddenly
Had Been a Resident of Hancock County, Iowa, Since the year 1885
Nearly Eighty-Six Years Old

Hayfield, Iowa, Oct. 1. Special

The Hayfield community was shocked late Saturday afternoon when it way reported that Grandma Geddes had passed away. She had been working in her garden in the forenoon and ate dinner as usual, but in the afternoon became ill and in a few minutes passed away.

Jane M. Cross was born in Syracuse N. Y., December 25th, 1832, and would have been eighty-six years of age next Christmas day. Her death occurred at Hayfield on Saturday, September 27, 1919.

When a young girl she moved with her parents to Will county, Illinois, where she met and at the age of 21 married Abram Geddes. They remained in that locality until the death of Mr. Geddes which occurred in 1883.

Seven children were born of this union, of whom five are still living: Mrs. Henry Boutilier, of Britt; Charles, of Chicago; George, of Knoxville, Iowa; Jason, of Granville, N. Dak., and Garret, of Hayfield, la. There are also 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren survive her.

Mrs. Geddes came to Hancock county in 1885 and has made her home here most of the time since, being away only while visiting her children. She has always been an active worker and was busy in her garden daily when weather permitted. For several years she has lived alone in a little bungalow built by her son Garret near his home.

Deceased was a life-long member of the M. E. church and an active Christian worker when her strength permitted. She has lived a long and useful life and will be missed by all. We extend sympathy to the bereaved ones.
