Services for Verner Hamilton, 79 of Garner, who died, Tuesday, Sept. 26, 1989 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, were held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. Msgr. Roger E. O'Brien as celebrant.

Mrs. Ronald Kumsher served as organist and accompanied the church choir. Ushers were Robert Kral and Dick Frein.

Honorary bearers were Ron Yohn, Arnold Hampel, Frank Zrostlik and Charles Studebaker.

Active bearers were Steve Claude, Lawrence Engstler, Dan McCormick, Roland Schmidt, Maynard Schoneman and Dale Slagel.

Graveside military rites were conducted the Garner Veteran's Ceremonial Unit.

Burial was in St. Boniface Cemetery in Garner. Visitation was held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel with a Scriptural Wake Service and Knight's of Columbus rosary being held there Thursday evening.

Verner James Hamilton, the son of Thomas and Ida (Meyer) Hamilton, was born July 20, 1910 at Goodell. He attended school at Goodell and then moved to Garner with his family, where he graduated in 1929. He worked for the Iowa Liquor Control Commission from 1935, until he retired in 1984.

October 1, 1938, he married Opal Monson at St. Boniface Rectory in Garner. They lived their entire married life in Garner. In 1943, Vern entered the service and served in the U. S. Navy in the Philippine area of conflict.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Knight's of Columbus, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Opal Hamilton of Garner; his children, Mrs. Marvea Smidt and her husband, Ron of Britt, Mrs. Laurel Jean Christianson and her husband, Mark, of Minneapolis, and Timothy Hamilton and his wife, Pamela, of Belmond; and eight grandchildren.
