Joseph Pavelka, 84

Services for Joseph Pavelka, 84, of Duncan, who died Wednesday at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 16, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Rev. Msgr. John Chihak as celebrant. Mass servers were Ronald Hrubes, Mark Paca, and Mike Oborny. Organist Rosanne Malek accompanied the choir. Ushers were Gerald Urich and Terry Boho.

Honorary bearers were: Steven Pavelka, Gerry Hrubes, Dean Hrubes, Dennis Hrubes, Dale Hrubes, Ronald Hrubes, Allen Pavelka, Alvin Pavelka, and Gene Pavelka. Active bearers were: David Hrubes, Robert Pavelka, Gregory Pavelka, Thomas Hrubes, Jerry Pavelka and Jeffery Pavelka.

Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan. Parish rosary and Catholic Workman's rosary were held Friday evening at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt.

Joseph Frank Pavelka, the son of John and Anna (Machan) Pavelka was born March 1, 1895 at Ostroh, Czechoslovokia. He came to the United States at the age of 18 with his father and worked in a harness shop and in a meat processing plant in Chicago. He then came to Hancock County in 1916 and worked on various farms in the Duncan area. August 27, 1918 he married Alice Zabransky in Duncan, with Father Ballon as officiant. They farmed in the Duncan area all of their married lives. They retired in 1952 and moved into Duncan.

He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and Catholic Workman's Lodge in Duncan.

He is survived by his children, Mr. John (Margaret) Hrubes of Britt, James and his wife, Evelyn, of Britt, Paul and his wife, Bea, of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Joseph (Leona) Hrubes of Britt and Joseph Jr., and his wife, Sheryl of Hastings, Minn.; 21 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Frank of Riga, Michigan; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Ruzicka of Prerov, Czechoslovokia, Mrs. Mary Navratil of Ricanyu, Czechoslovokia, and Mrs. Agnes Skreck of Ostroh, Czechoslovokia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, January 23, 1957; 3 grandsons; 1 granddaughter; and his parents.
