Mrs. Mary Matern
1910 - 1985

Services for Mrs. Mary Matern, 75, of Garner, who died Thursday at her home in Garner, were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 28 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. Msgr. John Chihak of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church as celebrant.

Mrs. Ronald Kumsher served as organist and accompanied the church choir. Ushers were Robert Kral and Elmer Urich.

Casket bearers were: Gerald Sherman, David Studer, Bernard Kunkel, Jerry Vitzthum, Mike Matern and Dennis Gibson. Burial was in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery at Garner.

Visitation and Parish rosary were held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Mrs. Mary Matern, daughter of Leo and Martha (Kunkel) West, was born June 16, 1910 at Haverhill Ia. At an early age she moved with her family to Kimball, Minn. and later to Wesley.

January 18, 1937 she was married to Ben W. Matern at Wesley. They farmed in the Algona and Thornton areas for a number of years. They also lived in the towns of Thornton and Meservey. In 1960 they moved to Garner where they continued to to live after retiring.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

She is survived by her husband, Ben, of Garner; two daughters: Lavonne Matern of Las Cruces, N. Mex. and Carlene Matern of East Moline, Ill.; two sisters: Mrs. Paul (Marcella) Studer of Wesley and Mrs. Gaylon (Mildred) Vitzthum of Stuart, Ia.; four brothers: Wilbur West of Mason City, Walter West of Wesley, Cletus West of Wesley and Donald West of Wesley.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, David; and her parents.
