Services for Elizabeth Matz, 91, of Garner, who died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 1994 at Concord Care Center in Garner were held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 17, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. John W. Hemann as celebrant. Mrs. Robert Young was lector.

Carolyn Kumsher, organist, accompanied the St. Boniface Choir. Ushers were Elmer Urich and Robert Kral.

Honorary bearers were Joe and Leona Hrubes, Clarence and Joan Hrubes, Frank and Alice Hrubes and Leonard Buckley.

Active bearers were David Matz, Ken Beenken, Travis Highley, Felix Mejia, Curtis Plagge and James Van Hove.

Burial was in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner. Visitation, Rosary Society rosary and a Scriptural Wake Service were held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Elizabeth Catherine Matz, the daughter of Fred and Marie (Bertemes) Girres, was born February 23, 1903 at Mallard. She attended school in the Mallard area and then moved to Wesley.

January 8, 1924, she married Henry Herman Matz at Wesley. They lived and farmed in the Britt area until 1942, when they began farming in the Garner and Duncan area. After her husband's death, she moved into Garner. Due to ill health she had resided at Concord Care Center in Garner since 1989. She enjoyed crocheting and flower gardening.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society and the Garner Senior Citizens.

She is survived by three children, Rachel Lubkeman and her husband, Melvin of Hampton. Virgil R. Matz and his wife, Glyse, of Mason City, and Beulah Ann Poncin and her husband, Dale of Garner; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters. Frederica Girres and Josephine Grendler, both of Garner; and a brother, Adolph Girres of Algona.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Matz, November 10, 1966; her parents, and a sister, Celestine Brandt.
