Services for Ambrose J. Kern, 66, of Garner, who died Friday, Nov. 20, 1987 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 23 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Gamer with Rev. Msgr. Roger E. O'Brien as celebrant.

Mrs. Ronald Kumsher served as organist and accompanied the church choir. Ushers were Elmer Urich and Merle Deibler.

Casket bearers were Bob Kern, Tom Kern, Jim Kern, Michael Kern, Joseph Sheedy, and Michael Zrostlik.

Graveside military rites were conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner. A scriptural wake service and parish rosary were held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Ambrose James Kern, the son of Kasper and Elizabeth (Simon) Kern, was born March 26, 1921, at Belmond. He attended the rural schools of Garner. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Coast Guard until 1946. He then worked in construction in Anchorage, Alaska for several years. He returned to Iowa and drove for Ruan Transport Corp. for four years.

August 11, 1958, he married Rose Zrostlik at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They moved to Miller and purchased the Miller Store in 1961; which they operated until 1986 when they retired.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Boniface Catholic Men's Society, Catholic Order of Forester's and the Gamer V.F.W. Post.

He is survived by his wife, Rose, of Garner; his children, Mrs. Susan Golwitzer and her husband, Dale, of Wesley; Gerald Kern of Webster City, Sgt. Timothy Kern of Lisbon, Portugal and Mrs. Nancy Graff and her husband, Gregg, of Iowa City; a granddaughter, Amber Rose Golwitzer; 3 brothers, Adam and his wife Katie, of Fort Dodge, Albert and his wife, Betty, of Cuba City, WI, and Joseph and his wife, Phyllis, of Garner; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Rita Kern, of Garner and a brother-in-law, Robert Sheedy, of Austin, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mrs. Ann Sheedy, and a brother, George A. Kern.
