1905-1991

Services for John Whitehurst, 86, of Garner, who died Sunday, Aug. 25, 1991 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City will be held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner with Rev. Robert T. Ellis as officiant.

Lucile Wesson, pianist, and Duane Cummings, organist, will accompany, soloist, Gary Moore. Norman Henschen will serve as usher.

Casket bearers will be John's four sons: Richard Whitehurst, Robert Whitehurst, Rollin Whitehurst and Reuben "Butch" Whitehurst.

Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Visitation will be after 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

John William Whitehurst, the son of Noah and Zora (Wyant) Whitehurst, was born July 7, 1905 at Newton, IL. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to Britt where they farmed. Three years later they moved to South Dakota where they continued farming until they returned to the Britt area when John was 17. For 11 years he worked with his father and neighboring farmers.

March 28, 1933 he married Marie Larsen at the Methodist parsonage in Britt. They lived in the Britt-Garner area where John worked for various farmers. In 1946, they began farming east of Garner until they retired in 1972.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Whitehurst of Garner; four sons, Richard Whitehurst and his wife, Jeanette of Garner, Robert Whitehurst and his wife, Sandra of Algona, Rollin Whitehurst and his wife, MaDonna of Mason City, and Reuben "Butch" Whitehurst and his wife, Terri of Garner; five grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Vestus Leerar and her husband, Jake of Corwith, Mrs. Ellen Koch and her husband, Carl of Britt, Mrs. Evelyn Stokesbary and her husband Arvid, of Clear Lake, Mrs. Gladys Schmid and her husband, Clarence of Britt, and Mrs. Irene Anderson of Britt; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Charlotte Harlan of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shannon Elizabeth Whitehurst; a grandson, Edward Allen Whitehurst; his parents, a sister, Mrs. Blanche Schutjer; and three brothers, Glen Whitehurst, Mervin Whitehurst and Ivan Whitehurst, who died in infancy.
