Services for Merlin Winter, Jr., 68, of Klemme who died Thursday, Sept. 15, 1988 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City were held 1:30 p.m., Monday Sept. 19 at the United Methodist Church in Klemme with Rev. Herb Shafer as officiant.

Margaret Katter, organist, accompanied, soloist, Robert Johnson. Ushers were Robert Scott and Lowell Mau.

Casket bearers were Stephen Winter, Roger Winter, Dennis Winter, Ivan Barkema, Mike Barkema, Don King, Willis King and Walter Gorman.

Burial was in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner with graveside military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Masonic services were held Sunday evening at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Merlin Cecil Winter, Jr., the son of Merlin Cecil and Lula (Torbet) Winter, was born August 30, 1921 at Mitchell, SD. While attending school at Mitchell, he played trombone in the U.S. National Guard Band and the Mitchell Corn Palace Band. After high school, he attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, MO. During W.W. II he served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps in New Caledonia and Hawaiian areas of the Pacific Theater of war.

July 3, 1947, he married Helen King at Draper, SD. They lived in Draper, SD, Ventura, Garner, Britt and New Hampton during his 41 years as an agent for the Milwaukee Railroad. In June of this year, they moved to Klemme from New Hampton. Merlin enjoyed golfing carpentry and outdoor work.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the V.F.W. and the Magic City Masoic Lodge #162 Murdo, SD.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Klemme; his children, Mrs. Pamela Barkema and her husband Ivan, of Garner, Stephen and his wife, Judy, of Garner, Dennis and his wife, Betty, of St. Paul, MN, and Roger and his wife, Debra, of Mason City; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
