Services for Mattie Riemer, 98, of Garner, who died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at Concord Care Center, Garner were held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating.

Music was provided by organist, Mrs. Mary Kopacek, who accompanied soloist, Mrs. Beverly Cataldo, and congregational hymns. Ushers were Maynard and Marvin Schoneman.

Casket bearers were Jessica Kern, Eldon Gast, Jed Gast, Will Gast, Richard Schreiber and Stan Trca.

Interment was in Concord Township Cemetery, Garner. Visitation was held Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

Mattie Mildred Riemer, the daughter of Fred and Cecelia (Nesbit) Gates, was born October 1, 1900, in Ell Township. She attended the rural schools of Hancock County and Klemme High School. She taught at Liberty # 2 rural school.

February 10, 1921, she married Ben Riemer at her parent's home in Ingram, WI. They were married at a double wedding with her twin sister who married Ben Ridder. The couple farmed the Riemer family farm where Ben had lived all his life. In 1946, they moved to Garner. Mattie was a cook at the Grill and Nesbit Cafes in Garner and worked at the R-Motel for 10 years. She enjoyed her family, baking, sewing, friends and gardening.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, U.M.W. and Ruth's Circle.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Mary Kay Janusik of Milwaukee, WI, and her children, Troy Janusik and his wife, Kelly, and his sons, Benjamin and Alexander, Steven Janusik and his wife, Holly, and their sons, Aaron and Kyle, Kristi Janusik and her son, Jacob and Jason Janusik, Patricia Ann Kern of Des Plaines, IL, Robert Kern of Garner and Bonnnie Lynne Kern of Mason City and her daughter, Jessica Kern; a sister, Margaret Reis of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Helen Gates of Halsy, OR.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, September 23, 1994; her daughter, Lois Alva Kern, April 5, 1968; son-in-law; George Kern, November 11, 1982; her parents; a brother, Lawrence Gates; and three sisters, Florence Martinson, Cora Schaefer and her twin sister, Hattie Ridder, August 17, 1997.
