1908-2000

Former Garner resident Marguerite J. Menke of Davenport, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000 at Genesis West in Davenport. She was 92.

Funeral services for Mrs. Menke will be held Wednesday, Nov. 22, 11 a.m. at the Garner United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Kay Hooper of the United Methodist Church will officiate.

Visitation is one hour prior to services in the church. Memorials may be left to the United Methodist Women or the Rebeka. Lodge.

Burial will be in the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner. The Fippinger Funeral Home of Aledo, Ill. is in charge of arrangements.

Marguerite Menke was born Sept. 23, 1908 in rural Corwith. She was the daughter of Joseph F. and Pauline (Seglem) Stokesbary. She received her education from the Garner and Miller schools and graduated from Marshalltown High School where she received her Normal Teaching Certificate.

She married Clayton Babcock on Sept. 10, 1926 in Miller. In 1953 she married Titus Menke in Garner. Mr. Menke died in 1987.

She taught school in Amsterdam Township and Kanawha school. She was later employed as a bookkeeper and tax specialist for H&R Block in Florida.

Mrs. Menke was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Rebeka Lodge. She enjoyed her family and gardening.

Survivors include four daughters: Deloris Metcalf of Cedar Creek, Mo., A. Joan Post of Albany, Calif., Ruth A. Bak of Newton, Janice E. Galloway of North Port, Mich.; three sons: Donald E. Babcock of Springfield, Mo., Jack C. Babcock of Davenport, Paul N. Babcock of Riceland, La.; 25 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Survivors also include one brother, Arvid Stokesbury of Clear Lake.

Mrs. Menke was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Marilyn Gouge; two grandsons and one brother.
