1935-2000

Duane R. Sonquist, 65, of Garner died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000 at his home.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 13 at the United Presbyterian Church, Garner. The Rev. Kay Hooper of the United Methodist Church officiated. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied congregational hymns. Ushers were Maynard and Marvin Schoneman.

Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery. Cataldo Funeral Home of Garner was in charge of arrangements.

Casket bearers were: George Albertson, Max Studer, Scott Dodd, Rich Jensen, Gary Malek and Bob Sniezek.

Duane Ray Sonquist, the son of Ray and Edith (Casperson) Sonquist was born Sept. 17, 1935 at Garner. He graduated from Garner High School in 1953 and then worked for Ed Buntenbach at the Garner Livestock Sales for several years.

On Oct. 18, 1958, Duane Sonquist and Patricia J. Sparks were married at Glidden. Mr. Sonquist drove a tank wagon for North Central Farm Service for a number of years. In 1972, they purchased a farm west of Hayfield and were engaged in farming until 1991. Mr. Sonquist was employed at Winnebago Industries in Forest City from 1991 until his retirement on Sept. 8 of this year.

On March 1, 1991, he married Ravae H. Lokensgard Scott at the United Methodist Church in Garner. He enjoyed farming, fishing, watching football, card playing and visiting with friends. Mr. Sonquist was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner.

Survivors include two children: Cindy Sonquist of Garner and Dean Sonquist and his wife, Marcia, and their three sons, Andrew, Ryan and Matthew, all of Garner; three step children, Brian Scott of Garner, Dawn Scott of Fairmont, Minn. and her special friend, Arden Herfendal, and James Scott of Berkeley, Calif.

Also surviving are three sisters, Charlene Partlo and her husband, Richard, of Cadillac, Mich., Marcelle Grant and her husband, Verlon, of Riverside, Calif. and June King and her husband, Don, of Cedar Rapids and two brothers, Victor Sonquist and his wife, Karen, of Caro, Mich. and Bernard Sonquist of San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Sonquist was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Sonquist, Sept. 8, 1985; his second wife, Ravae Scott Sonquist, on Oct. 8, 1999; a son, Scott Duane Sonquist, on Sept. 26, 1989; his father, Ray Sonquist; his mother, Edith Sonquist Thorson and his step father, Clarence Thorson.
