Services for John Mortensen, 69, Britt, who died Monday, March 17, 1997, at North Iowa Mercy Health Care Center in Mason City, were held Friday, March 21, 10:30 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Britt with Rev. James A. Mattson officiating.

Music was provided by organist, Mrs. Donna Tech, who accompanied the congregation hymns. Ushers were Allan Burgardt and Jeff Nielsen.

Casket bearers were Tom Rose, Dan Schultz, Paul Buns, Brad Sorenson, Merle Muhm and Roger Leerar.

Burial was at the Crystal Lake Cemetery with Ewing Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

John Howard Mortensen, the son of Jens and Esther Evelyn Johnson Mortensen, was born February 25, 1928, on the Mortensen family farm north of Britt. He attended country school and graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1945. He then attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1950.

John was a Military Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.

June 12, 1949, he married Catherine Ann Rose at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Moline, IL, where John was employed at John Deere as an engineer. They later moved back to the farm north of Britt where John farmed most of his life. He loved farm life, enjoyed fishing, telling stories and visiting with people.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; his children, Lisa Greiman and her husband, Mark of Moose Lake, MN, and Todd and his wife, Betsy and daughter, Morgan, of Britt; two sisters, Gladys Anderson and her husband, Charlie of Lindsborg, KS, and Laura O'Mara of Largo, FL; several brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jens and Evelyn.
