Richard Dean Larson

Garner - Richard Dean Larson, better known as Dick, 68, of Garner passed away Monday (April 10, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 14, at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating.
Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Interment will be at Ellington Prairie Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Richard Dean Larson, the son of Clifford Earl and Agnes Kathryn (Johnson) Larson, was born May 23, 1931, at Mason City. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Garner and graduated from Garner High School in 1948. He attended the University of Iowa at Iowa City.

Dick served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After the service, he farmed with his parents.

On Oct. 9, 1955, he was married to Deloris Andreasen at Audubon. He continued to farm and also drove a truck for Schmidt Livestock. In 1972 he became the manager at the Forest City Golf and Country Club. In 1979 he purchased the Bungalow Restaurant and Motor Lodge which he continued to operate until the time of his death. Dick also had other business interests.

He enjoyed his family, grandchildren and friends. He also enjoyed card playing, going for a Sunday drive and was an avid sports fan. Dick was very proud to have his farm recognized as a Century Farm.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and past member of Ellington Prairie Church. He was a member of the Garner American Legion, lifetime member of the Garner V.F.W., served on the board of directors of the Iowa Restaurant Association and was active in a bowling league.

He is survived by his children, Patricia Kay Goerner and her husband, John, of Liberty Hill, Texas, Elizabeth Joan "Betty Jo" Larson Gustafson and her husband, Tim, of Apple Valley, Minn., Sally Jean Larson of Forest City, Charles Earl Larson of Clear Lake and Robert Dean Larson and his wife, Renee, of Naperville, Ill.; four grandchildren, Danielle Larson, Brooke Larson, Abby Larson and Jenna Gustafson; a sister, Marlys Ennis and her husband, Richard, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Merry Larson Stroud of Indianola; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford in 1989; his mother, Agnes in 1995; and a brother, LeRoy Larson in 1983.
