1917-2000

Former Crystal Lake resident, Orval G. Jamtgaard of Nora Springs died Saturday, May 13, 2000 at the Nora Springs Care Center. He was 83.

Funeral services for Mr. Jamtgaard were held Tuesday, May 16 at the United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake. The Rev. Gary Marzolf officiated. Music was provided by Mabel Rensink, who accompanied soloist Bruce Wubben.

Burial was in the Crystal Lake Cemetery. The Ewing Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers were Michael I. Jamtgaard, Paul Pergande, Terry Albers, Mark Jamtgaard, Russell Helm and Kelly Jenson.

Graveside military services were conducted by the Crystal Lake American Legion Post #409.

Orval G. Jamtgaard was born Feb. 12, 1917 in Union County, S.D. The son of Peder and Inga (Stene) Jamtgaard, he was raised in South Dakota and attended country schools. Following his graduation from the eighth grade, he farmed with his father and did part-time work for local farmers.

On Oct. 8, 1939, Orval Jamtgaard and Arlene Younie of Hawarden were married. The couple moved to Sioux City where Mr. Jamtgaard was employed by Swift and Company. Mr. Jamtgaard was inducted into the United States Marine Corps in February of 1944. He served two years and was discharged in January of 1946.

In February of 1946, Orval and Arlene Jamtgaard moved to Crystal Lake. Mr. Jamtgaard worked for his brother in the blacksmith business. He purchased the business from his brother in 1948 which he continued to operate until his retirement in 1982.

Mr. Jamtgaard was a 50-year member of the Crystal Lake American Legion Post #409 and assisted the Legion Post organize the Avenue of Flags for veterans of the area. He served as mayor of Crystal Lake for three and one-half years and was a member of the Crystal Lake Senior Citizens and the Loyal Order of the Moose. Mr. Jamtgaard enjoyed his family, friends, golfing, fishing and sports.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene; two sons, Gene Jamtgaard and his wife, Jan, of Nora Springs and John Jamtgaard and his friend, Teresia, of Mason City; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Also surviving are a sister, Shirley Hartman and her husband, Marvin, of Schuyler, Neb.; and two brothers, Silas Jamtgaard and his wife, Amy, of Mason City; and Robert Jamtgaard and his wife, Betty, of Abilene, Kans.

Mr. Jamtgaard was preceded in death by his parents.
