Ben Hinders

Britt - Ben Hinders, 92, of Britt, passed away Wednesday (May 30, 2001) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

The funeral for Ben Hinders will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Christian Reformed Church in Britt, with Pastor Steven Mulder officiating. Burial will take place in the Woden Christian Reformed Cemetery near Woden.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour before services at the church.

Ben Hinders was born Sept. 27, 1908, on the family farm in Orthel Township, Hancock County. His parents were Thomas Hinders Sr. and Mertie Pannkuk Hinders. He was baptized as an infant and later made a profession of faith at the Woden Christian Reformed Church. He attended Orthel and Bingham Township schools.

He was united in marriage with Gladys Mary Seefeld on Feb. 25, 1933, at the Woden Christian Reformed Parsonage. They made their home on a farm near Wesley until 1957, when they moved to Britt.

Ben did custom trucking until 1974, plus many jobs at the Britt Farmers Coop and Winnebago Industries. He operated his yard service business until Aug. 21, 1994, when he sustained a heart attack.

He served his community in a variety of ways, including school director and president of Farmers telephone line.

Ben was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church, serving as deacon and elder. He helped organize the Britt Christian Reformed church in 1957 and was a charter member. He was very active in all the church activities. He was one of the first elders elected in the new church. He served a total of 40 years in the consistory.

He is survived by one daughter, Mavis Jean and James Christians, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren, Ronald and Kristine Turner, Janice and Joey Marion, Janet and John Schreur, and Daniel and Sue Christians; eight great-grandchildren, Samantha Turner, Laura and Joshua Marion, Nathan and Kelly Ryckman, Jordan Ryckman, and Nicholas, Amanda and Sari Christians; one great-great grandson, Zachary Ryckman; two sisters, Gertrude Riggle, of Forest City, and Mertie and Ernie Georg of Algona; three brothers, Milton and Imogene Hinders of Algona, Herman and Marion Hinders, of Worthington, Minn., and Dr. Alvin and JoAnn Hinders, of Fulton, Ky.; two sisters-in-law, Ann Hinders, of Britt, and Irene Hinders, of Woden.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys, in 1995; one daughter, Marlene, in 2001; one son, Arllan, in 1955; one great-grandson, David Marion, in 1984; and three brothers, Martin, Thomas Jr. and Ted Hinders.
