Chapman Loses Wife By Death

Passed Away At Her Home In Britt Friday Morning, May First

Came West from Pottsdam, N. Y., In 1852, to Iowa in 1857

Mrs. C. M. Chapman, who had lived in Britt and vicinity since the spring of 1876 and was one of the moving spirits during the development of Hancock county, died at her home in Britt at an early hour on Friday morning, May 1st. She had been sick for several years.

Mrs. Chapman's life had been largely spent in the pioneer country. She was born at Pottsdam, New York, August 13, 1850, her maiden name being Julia L. Perkins. At two years of age she accompanied her parents in covered wagons to the western borders of the pioneer country, settling at Madison, Wisconsin. In 1857 they again loaded their covered wagons with provisions and driving a herd of cattle ahead of them, set out toward the western horizon to find a new home. They went as far as Worth county, Iowa, where they stopped to homestead.

There she met C. M. Chapman and was united in marriage to him at Northwood, Iowa, December 19, 1869. The couple lived in Worth county until 1876 when they came to Hancock county and settled in Amsterdam township, later moving to Britt and this place and vicinity has since been their home.

Four children were born to this union, Cyrus, Will and Mrs. Myrtle Cummins, of Britt, and Oscar, of Staples, Minn. One brother, Myron S. Perkins, lives at Northwood. There are nine grandchildren living, also the husband.

Deceased was taken into full membership in the Methodist church in young womanhood and her precepts through life have been given in a way that will be lasting.

Another of our old fashioned mothers has passed out and we do her honor. She has passed the way of all things earthly after a life spent in an age that has been marked as one of the greatest in earth's history. Her kindly deeds will remain as a pleasant memory to her closest associates.

Funeral services in charge of Rev. John Drake Wolcott were held from the Methodist church at 2 p.m. Sunday. The body was taken to Evergreen cemetery, Britt, for burial.
