Gus O'Kreug [O'Krueg] Is Victim Feb. 9

Goodell - This community was shocked and deeply saddened shortly after noon Friday when it became known that Gus O'Kreug [O'Krueg] had died suddenly. Mr. O'Kreug, though not so well, having suffered with heart disease, felt able to do some snow shoveling, so was in his own yard attempting to move a bit of snow. Their neighbor, Mrs. Beier noticed he had fallen, so help was summoned and also medical help, but his life was gone, caused by a heart attack.

Gustave O'Kreug, age 86, was born September 12, 1864, at Oskosh, Wisc., and passed away at his home in Goodell, Feb. 9, 1951. He was one of ten children born to Anton and Rosina O'Kreug.

At the age of 12 years, he with his parents moved to the farm on which he spent his early youth. As a young man he spent a number of years in the North woods, working in the lumber camp. He has told many interesting accounts of his experiences in taking logs down the river to the lumber mills.

On April 20, 1893, he was united in marriage to Rhoda Smith Church. To this union were born, Carl Gustave who died at birth, Ruby Marie Ruka of Goodell and Dortha Marjorie Rhodeback of Arcanum, Ohio.

In May 1896, Mr. and Mrs. O'Kreug came to Iowa and resided on the Harmon section, in later years they purchased a home in Goodell, retiring from active work, and have resided here since.

He was a faithful attendant of the Evangelical United Brethren church, also a generous supporter of all good things of this community. He was a man devoted to his family and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was genuinely interested in his community, especially the children who will remember him, for he loved them all. (What better things can be said of a man?)

He leaves to mourn, his wife and two daughters, three grandchildren, Jerry and Bonnie Rhodenback of Arcanum, Ohio, and Mrs. Wilmer Hauge of Goodell; two great grandchildren, Dianne and Donna Hauge of Goodell, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at a funeral home in Belmond and at two o'clock in the E.U.B.church at Goodell, with the pastor, the Rev. James T. Stewart officiating. Music was furnished by the mens quartet, composed of J. J. Cook, V. E. Harris, W. P. Butts, and A. O. Hanson with Mrs. Paul Veldhouse at the piano. Interment was made in Amsterdam cemetery.
