Martha Larson rites held in Woden

Funeral services for Martha Larson, 71, of Woden was held Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden with Rev. Keith Klemm as officiant. Mrs. John Kurtzleben, organist, accompanied Mrs. Dean Cataldo, soloist.

Ushers were James Crone and John Kurtzelben. Honorary pallbearers were David Reser, Tom Twedt, Forrest Buffington and Bill Grerdes.

Casket bearers were John Monson, John R. Elwood, Rex Larson, Paul Gerdes, James Buns and Jerry Ehlers. Burial was in Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden with Cataldo Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Martha Wilhelmina Larson was born in Hettinger, N. Dak., to Wilhelmina (Theilengerdes) and George Ehlers, Sr. After attending country school near Hettinger, she worked in a bakery in Hettinger for several years and also for the baker's family. During World War II she moved to Long Beach, Calif., where she worked as a telephone operator. She then moved to Woden to be near her sister, Mary, and also worked in a grocery store in Woden.

Nov. 15, 1947, she was married to Lars C. Larson at the little Brown Church at Nashua, and they made their home in Woden.

With the help of Hospice, she died of cancer at home Sept. 4, 1993, surrounded by loved ones.

Mrs. Larson enjoyed her activities in several community organizations including American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 628 and the Hancock County Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, W.E.L.C.A. of St John's Lutheran Church, a Bible study group and an ecumenical Bible study group.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane Reser and her husband, David, of Cerritos, Calif., and Karen VanDeusen of Ames; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Monson of Woden and Ann Walch of Cerritos, Calif.; a brother, Fred Ehlers of Hettinger, N. Dak.; and a sister-in-law, Matilda Ehlers of Hettinger, N. Dak.

She was preceded in death by her husband who died Oct. 23, 1981, her parents, an infant brother, Johnnie, and a sister, Elsie, who died in early childhood.
