Jay T. Griggs
1876-1958

Jay Thomas Griggs was born Sept. 6, 1876, on a farm near Ackley, Iowa, the second of five children born to John and Emily (Sharp) Griggs, both American born.

When Jay was seven years old the family purchased and moved onto a section of land in Avery Township, Hancock County, Iowa. Here he attended Avery Center School, which was located on their land; became a member of the E.U.B. Church at Goodell, and as a youth, sang in the choir.

On October 3, 1900, Jay T. Griggs and Margaret Grosz were married by the Rev. Albertson at Garner, Iowa. They took over a quarter section of virgin prairie land from his father's holdings, and little by little built it into a neat and comfortable homestead.

It was a family farm where the children helped with the work. While nothing was neglected on the farm, still these folks found time to do considerable hunting and fishing - a sort of family hobby.

In 1942, after the family of five children were grown and in homes of their own, and after having spent 41 happy years on this farm, Jay and Margaret Griggs retired and moved to Ventura, Iowa, where the have lived next to the lake for 16 years.

Mr. Griggs enjoyed these leisure years very much until a few months ago his health began to fail. The end came Monday afternoon, July 28, 1958, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 22 days.

Griggs, Miller, Iowa; May (Mrs. Rapheal Kernon), Great Falls, Montana; Nellie (Mrs. Gerald Burk), Goodell, Iowa; and Kenneth Grosz Griggs, Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, George Griggs of Klemme, Iowa; and three sisters, Margaret (Mrs. W.
