And still another of our respected citizens has been called by the death angel. The final summons came to Carl Griffen [Griffin] last Thursday, October 19th. He had been sick for some time, nevertheless his death was unexpected and came as a severe shock to the relatives and his friends. Dropsy was the cause of his death.

Mr. Griffen was a good neighbor, a kind husband and father, an upright and honorable citizen, and his passing will be sincerely mourned.

Carl Griffen was born at Fala Province, Hanover, Germany, on June 10, 1845; died October 19, 1911, aged 66 years, 4 months and 9 days. He emigrated to Giard, Clayton county, Iowa, in 1872 and on January 11, 1876, was married to Hannah Topel, who died while they lived in Oregon. He was married to Caroline Knocke [Knoke] in 1889, then making his residence in Hancock county, Iowa.

He identified himself with the Methodist Episcopal church in his youth. He loved God and His people; was an inspiration to the minister in giving close attention during the service.

His sickness gave him considerable unrest, but he bore it all patiently. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, three daughters, two sons and one step son, many grandchildren, one brother and one sister living in Germantown, also several brothers and sisters in Germany.

Funeral services were held at Germantown German Methodist church conducted by the pastor, G. W. Schneider, assisted by Rev. G. Haefner.
