Dr. W. L. Gilbert was born in Center County, Pennsylvania, May 27, 1862, and died in Goodell, Iowa, Dec 12, 1908, aged 46 years, 5 months and 15 days.

He was married to Miss Carrie S. Reisher in Frederick City, Maryland, Feb 26, 1885, and to this union two children were born - Mary E. and Gladys, both of whom with their mother were present at the funeral. Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert moved to Goodell in the fall of 1888 and he has been practicing medicine here most of the time since.

The subject of this sketch has always been an active energetic man, giving liberally of his time labor and sympathy in homes of sickness and death.

In religion he developed the habit of weighing things in the balance of reason, discarding that which to him did not harmonize with the Creator's plan as he saw God's law in the big book of Nature. He believed in doing good for the sake of humanity and not in the fear of the anger and vengeance of a higher power.

As to future existence he felt that each will be rewarded according to the good deeds done in this life. May we cover with the mantle of charity his earthly shortcomings, whate'er they may have been, and keep bright in the limelight of memory his many good deeds.

Each death is a link that binds us to the beyond, so let us live and do that when our time comes we will be found a good link in the endless chain of the plan of Nature.

Besides his wife and two daughters, he leaves on brother and five sisters, also a number of other relatives and a host of friends to mourn his departure.

The funeral services were held at the U.B. Church Dec 19 at 2 o'clock, Rev. Hartman officiating, after which the procession followed the funeral car to our silent city.
