"Cliff" Estel Services Held

Special to Garner Leader and Signal

Goodell: Sad news reached Goodell Saturday, telling of the death of one time resident, Clifford Estel, age 63, who passed away Friday, Feb 11, 1955, at the Soldier's Home hospital at Marshalltown.

Clifford Estel was born July 12, 1891 at Sigourney, the son of Roland and Susan Estel, and grew to manhood in that community. He served with the Armed Forces in World War I, fought overseas in the Argonne Battle, being in France when the Armistice was declared. It was while fighting overseas that "Cliff" as he was known to everyone, received serious gas injuries to his lungs, from which he never fully recovered. After World War I he came to Goodell to the parental home, as his parents had moved here during Cliff's time in the service. He was employed on various farms in this community and with Produce companies when his health permitted. After the death of his father, Cliff remained at home and for 16 years cared for his invalid mother who had suffered a stroke before the death of Mr. Estel. Cliff was often commended by all in the care of his mother until her death and the upkeep of their home, which he did so faithfully those many years.

About five years ago Cilff's health failed, and he submitted to treatments and major operations at the Veteran's hospital at Des Moines. During that period of time, both of his legs were amputated. This serious loss to him, was taken cheerfully. A few years ago Cliff entered the Iowa Soldier's Home at Marshalltown to make his home, and the greater part of the time he was a patient in that hospital. In the early Fall of the past year Cliff developed chest pains and in November was taken to the Sanitarium at Oakdale for examinations. His condition was considered serious so he was taken to the University Hospital at Iowa City and in early December submitted to surgery on his chest. It was found that he was suffering with Cancer. He returned to the hospital at Iowa Soldier's Home in Marshalltown, the day before Christmas and was confined to his bed until his death, being very ill.

Cliff was a member of the American Legion of Goodell, and always took his part when able to do so.

Cliff is survived by four brothers, Herbert Estel of Modesta, Calif.; Fred Estel of Jefferson, Wis.; John Estel of San Francisco, Calif.; and Donnell Estel of Mason City; one sister, Mrs. George Wolfe (Laura) of Ackley, and many nieces and nephews, besides a host of friends who will always remember his friendship.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the E.U.B. church in Goodell, with the pastor the Rev. Park E. Miller officiating. Mrs. Park E. Miller and Mrs. Henry Brede sang as duets, favorite hymns, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Matt Smith.

The local American Legion attended the services in a body and participated in the services at the graveside.

Pallbearers were Wm. Dempsey of Belmond; Harve Boller, Charles City; Amos Hanson, Howard Dominy, E. C. Kienenberger, and Marcellus Fuller. Burial took place beside his parents in the family lot at Amsterdam cemetery east of Goodell.
