Mrs. J. M. Elder Dead

Mrs. J. M. Elder died last Friday at 4:15 p.m., aged 63 years and 12 days. Funeral service was held at the house Monday at 3:00 p.m. Rev. Sauerman preached the sermon and Rev. McConnell made the prayer. The Congregational choir furnished the music. The body was interred in Concord Cemetery. The floral tributes from her friends were most elegant and profuse.

Emma C. Rogers was born at Freeport, Illinois, November 5th, 1848, and was among the pioneers in Hancock county. She was united in marriage to J. M. Elder June 21, 1884.

Our acquaintance with deceased has been but a few years. She was one of the most remarkable women we ever knew. For many years a confirmed invalid, constantly suffering great pain and confined to the house, by her natural infirmity, one would expect her to be somewhat irritable and to entertain rather narrow and contracted ideas. Such was not the case. She was one of the most amiable and interesting conversationalist of our acquaintance. She did not parade her aches and pains but just talked and entertained one. With her wide reading and rich stories of a naturally brilliant mind, she would make time pass most pleasantly to those callers who were so fortunate as to be among her friends.

She was a member of the Congregational church and we saw something in her face not usually on the face of a dead person. It was a countenance that we cannot describe, but it portrayed peace, sweet sweet peace, which made us wonder if at the very last she did not get a glimpse into the great beyond where suffering ceases and the soul is perfectly and beautifully formed.
