Robert Elder was born in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania February 23, 1838, was married to Henrietta Bloom May 28, 1863, died Sunday December 1, and was buried in Concord Cemetery Tuesday December 3, 1907.
Decedent moved to this county in May 1866, since which time he was a constant resident of Hancock County. He was the first agent of the Milwaukee at Garner, served as deputy Treasurer under Thomas Hymer in '82 and '83, was Garner's first mayor and served one or more terms as councilman. He was Postmaster during Cleveland's first administration and Cashier of Hancock County Bank from 1884 to 1892 when it was merged into the City Bank.
Deceased was a charter member of Bethel Lodge A. F. & A. M. and Bethel Chapter R. A. M. An earnest worker in both these organizations; he could always be found at his post of duty as long as his health would permit. He was a democrat in politics and always loyal to the party. The same may be said of his conduct towards his friends. Once gain his friendship and he was your friend forever, kind and obliging to all and popular with his neighbors.
He had much to do with shaping the early history of Garner and built one of the first dwelling houses in town.
The funeral was Masonic and the beautiful services at the house and grave were impressive indeed. Rev. Henry was assisted by Rev. Jackson and Rev. Quinn in conducting the service. The floral offerings were elegant and profuse. There were more than could be seated in the house to pay their last respects to the departed.
He leaves a wife, brother John and sister Mary Upton, both of whom are older than was he.
