Howard V. Schaper
1896-1987

Services for Howard Schaper, 91, Britt, who died May 31, 1987 at the Westview Care Center in Britt, were held Wednesday, June 3, 2 p.m. at the Britt Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Clyde Lee officiating. The closing prayer was given by Raymond Neswold.

Music was provided by organist, Mrs. Dwight Anderson, and soloists, Wayne Lawhorn and Cherlyn Johnson. Ushers were Earl Hesley, M.E. Swan and Frank Whetstone.

Honorary casket bearers were Robert Paulson, Don Ross, Richard Grifhorst, Carl J. Kuch, Louie Smidt and Calvin Perkins.

Official casket bearers were Craig Andrews, Wade Andrews, Tim Ball, Danny Osborne, Rick Richeson, Bruce Andrews, Doug Andrews, Mark Ball and Bruce Hamblen.

Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt with military graveside services provided by Britt American Legion Post #315 and the VFW. Services were under the direction of Ewing Funeral Home.

Howard Vinson Schaper, son of Henry A. and Maria Ward Schaper, was born February 11, 1896 on a farm one and a half miles east of Britt and was raised there. He attended the Dickerson School in the Britt Township.

He served his country from April 1918 through April 1919 during World War I in France. Upon his return home he purchased the family farm from his parents.

On June 8, 1921, he married Ethel R. Hunt in Kansas City, MO. Along with the farming operation the couple started hatching chickens and this business soon became known as the Schaper Hatchery. Howard operated the hatchery for forty years until 1961, then sold it to his son and son in law. It is now the Ball Farm Service.

Howard was a member of the Britt Congregational United Church of Christ, the Britt American Legion Post #315 and a past president of the Iowa Poultry Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ethel; an infant son Howard Randall, an infant daughter Rebecca Ann; two sisters, Francis Whitney and Norma Driste; and one brother Clifford Schaper, all of Britt.

He is survived by a son Kenneth of Britt; three daughters, Virginia Hamblen of Garden Grove, Gloria and husband Harley Andrews of Nenzel, NE, and Marjory and husband Verlin Ball of Britt; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; four sisters, Bertha Schwab, Viola Lechelt and Martha
Hanson all of Britt and Agnes Klinoff of Waterloo.
