Rev. Curtis DeVanceEsther Dorothy Haefner, the daughter of Henry C. and Ida Louise (Lenz) Beier, was born September 23, 1905 on a farm near Klemme. She attended the rural schools of Liberty Township, two years at Klemme High School and then graduated from East High School in Waterloo. Esther attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her teaching certificate. She taught in the rural schools of Hancock County before and after her marriage. On November 1, 1927 she was married to Wilbur Lloyd Haefner by Rev. A.W. Gauger at the United Methodist parsonage in Klemme. They farmed west of Klemme until 1948,
when they moved into town, where they lived the rest of their married lives. She had lived at Prairie View Apartments in Garner since December of 1991. Esther had worked at Sawtelle's Grocery Store fora few years. She enjoyed her family, friends, music, gardening and handcraft work.She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Klemme, U.M.W., Grandmother's Club and the Klemme Garden Club.
She is survived by her two daughters, Gloria Ruth Sherwood and her husband, Frank, of Mason City and Margaret Ann Bruner and her husband, Larry, of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Debra Jean Frank, Jon Sherwood, Steven Bruner and Kristen Christensen; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Fred Beier of Kanawha; two sisters, Helen Leiran and Mildred Beier both of Beltrami, MN; a sister-in-law, Gertrude Beier of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Haefner, March 15, 1977; her parents; six brothers and sisters, Carl Beier, Elmer Beier, Mabel Hansen, Ethel Cook, Ruth Kalm and Novella Budlong.
