GEORGE W. FOVAL PASSED AWAY LAST FRIDAY

George W. Foval, one of the community's honored citizens and business men, passed away Friday of last week, his death coming with so little warning as to be a real shock to the entire community. Mr. Foval had been in poor health for some time, but was seriously sick for but a brief time. He recently visited hospitals at Iowa City and Rochester and was taking treatments at a sanitarium at Colfax where he passed away. In his death this community lost one of its oldest business men. He had lived here about a third of of a century, during the most of which time he was engaged in business for years running the harness store and of late years being engaged in the poultry and produce business. During the Cleveland administration he served as postmaster in Jewell.

Funeral service were held from the B. L. Deedrich home Monday afternoon, July 24, 1922, at two o'clock, in charge of Republic Lodge, No. 468, A. F. & A. M., of Jewell.

Rev. G. A. McKinley of the Federated Church, gave the funeral sermon, and the Masonic Quartet, composed of M. H. Porter, H. M. Kinzer, Merlin E. Williams, and J. DeVere Kahl sang, accompanied by Miss Marguerite Kahl, of the Order of the Eastern Star, at the piano.

At the cemetery, Rev. McKinley conducted a short Masonic ritual service, assisted by Frank Champion, Master of the Lodge, Past Master Merlin E. Williams, acting as Marshal, had charge of the funeral procession. The pall-bearers were: Past Master John T. McDonald, Past Master H. T. Wilson, Past Master Carl Bentson, Treasurer H. C. Smith, Junior Deacon N. C. Bonner, and Past Steward Erick Christian.

George W. Foval was born in Shullsburg, Wis., June 2, 1857. He was married to Cora Quinche, June 11, 1882. He came to Iowa and settled at Jewell in 1889, where he has since made his home. Two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Foval, Mrs. W. A. McCauley of Paulina, Iowa, and Mrs. B. L. Deedrich, of Jewell, Iowa. He united with the Methodist Church of Shullsburg, Wis. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge with the following record:

He was initiated as an Entered Apprentice, September 30, 1890; passed to the degree of a Master Mason, November 18, 1890; in Republic Lodge, No. 468, of this place.

He held different offices in Republic Lodge; and was Worshipful Master in the year 1897.

He received the Mark Master, Past Master, Most Excellent Master, and Royal Arch Mason degrees in Hope Chapter, No. 88, of Webster City.

He was ever willing to befriend a Brother Mason; and always anxious to be of assistance in case of distress.

He died at the Victoria Sanitarium at Colfax, Iowa, July 21, 1922. He leaves a wife, two daughters, and two grandchildren to mourn his departure.
