Mrs. Hansman Barkema Died Saturday
Mrs. Hansman Barkema (Henrica Jan Kielgge) was born in Kritscum, Hanover, January 22, 1846 and died at her home at Jewell, Iowa, December 31, 1921. She was married to Hansman Barkema at Freeport, Illinois July 20, 1869 and moved to Iowa soon afterwards living near Ackley for a year and since the fall of 1870 living in Hamilton County. Mrs. Barkema was brought up in the faith of the Gospel and was trained religiously in the Holland Dutch Reformed Church.
Of the family of ten children, five boys and five girls, two are dead and the eight living are Tim, Henry, John, Hans, Harmon, Mrs. J. W. Koop, Mrs. August Abrahamson and Mrs. Emory Headley. There are also 42 grand children and eight great grandchildren. The children were all present at the bedside of their mother when the end came, except Henry who resides in California, and was back here a year ago.
Mrs. Barkema has been a cripple for years as the result of an accident 24 years ago. Six weeks ago she fell and injured her shoulder, and since that time she has been gradually failing. She endured her affliction with christian fortitude and lived to a good old age.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home and at the Federated church, conducted by Rev. G. A. McKinley. The body was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery. The pall bearers were Geo. Klaver, Geo. Olson, Willie Koop, Peter Barkema, H. G. Barkema, and George Barkema, grandsons of the deceased. The community extends sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family.
