SVEN OLSON DIED IN THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY

Sven Olson was born April 15, 1889, near Jewell, and died at Fort Brody, Sault, St. Marie, Mich., October 25, 1918 at the age of 29 years, 6 months and 10 days.

He was baptized and confirmed in Bethesda Lutheran church and has always been a faithful and active member of the same. He could always be depended upon to do his part and was one of the leading members of the choir and Luther League. He received his education in the Jewell public schools and Jewell Lutheran College. Prior to a few months ago he always stayed at home, working on his father's farm.

In May, 1918, together with a quota of men from this community, he entered the U. S. Army, going first to Camp Dodge. After a short time he was transferred to Fort Snelling, Minn., and in August he went with his company to Fort Brody to do guard duty at the Great Locks. Here he was stricken ill with influenza, which later developed into pneumonia from which he died. His father and sister, Millie, here with him the last two weeks, he met death bravely and calmly, confessing faith in his God.

The body was brought home for burial. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor at the home on Tuesday afternoon, the business places being closed during the services. Misses Mabel Jacobson and Carrie Ostrem sang "He Will Hold Me Fast." He leaves mourning him, his parents, three brothers and three sisters. All were present at the funeral except his brother Albert, who is a soldier in the U. S. forces in France. This makes the third gold star in the service flag of Bethesda Lutheran church and the sixth in Jewell's service flag. The community deeply sympathizes with the bereaved family in the loss of their soldier boy, who has thus nobly given his life in the service of his country, as fully and completely as though it had occurred over there.
