DEATH OF HENRY GATH
After an illness of about seven weeks, Mr. Henry Gath Sr. passed away last Sunday forenoon, January 25th, at ten o'clock, at the home of his son, H. T. Gath. Mr. Gath seemed apparently much improved Sunday morning and was able to dress himself. His death came suddenly, and peacefully, being caused by heart failure.
Henry Gath was born in Germany, August 10th, 1835, and died in Jewell, Iowa, January 25, 1920, aged 84 years, 5 months and 15 days. He came to America in 1868 and settled in Jackson County, Iowa. He moved to Hamilton County in 1877. He was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Freund in 1858. To this union three children were born, two sons and one daughter. One son and the daughter died in infancy. His wife died in 1906 leaving a son, H. T. Gath, and his grandson, Carl, to mourn his departure. At the age of fourteen years he was confirmed and became a member of the Lutheran Church and has never united with any other church but attended the Presbyterian Church before moving into town. Thus at the end of a long and useful life, he has laid all earthly burdens down and entered into rest.
The funeral services were held at the home of his son, H. T. Gath, at one thirty, Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. G. O. Porter. Interment was made at Evergreen cemetery.
The pall bearers were: N. C. Bonner, H. T. Wilson, John Groves, T. F. Baldus, O. I. Kleaveland and John Jacobson. The funeral services were largely attended, and the floral tributes were many and beautiful, and spoke eloquently of the high esteem in which this fine old gentleman has always been held by all in this community.
Those from out of town who were here in attendance at the funeral yesterday were: C. P. H. Saltwell, of Mapleton, a brotherinlaw of H. T. Gath, and his sisters, Mrs. Henry Myers, of Manila, and Mrs. Merdinger and her daughter, of Fairmont, Minn., Mrs. R. W. Knuths, of Dows, and Henry Voss of Webster City.
Card of Thanks
I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the kind friends and neighbors for the help given during the sickness of my father, and for the kind sympathy and the beautiful flowers.
H. T. Gath.
