George Johnson, one of the pioneer business men of Jewell and a resident of Jewell almost from the very day that the town was first founded passed away Friday morning, December 11th, at four o'clock. Death came after along illness resulting from a succession of paralytic strokes. For several years Mr. Johnson had been in failing health, and on the first of last June he suffered a stroke since when he had been helpless and has gradually weakened until the eventual end came. During the long months of sickness and pain, he was a patient and uncomplaining sufferer.

He came to America in March, 1880, and settled at Afton, Union county, Iowa, where he stayed about a year and then moved to Jewell in 1881. He clerked in the Warburton Bros. store for about ten years and then started in business for himself. He remained in business until in 1915 when he retired. Mr. Johnson was united in marriage to Miss Else Marie Nelson, September 29, 1882. The surviving relatives besides the wife are: a sister, Mrs. Sine Anderson of Randers, Jyland, Denmark, and a nephew, Mr. John C. Anderson of Jewell. A sister, Mrs. Andrew Hanson of Canton, S. D. passed away seven months ago. The deepest sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved relaatives.
