S. Charmaine Book, 60, Ames, a former Webster City resident, died Tuesday, May 21 at her home. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Ames. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Visitation at the Adam Funeral Home in Ames is today from 3-9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m.

S. Charmaine Withers, daughter of Frank Todd and E. Eunice (Horton) Withers, was born Dec. 1, 1930 in Woodstock, Ill. She was raised in Webster City, and received her nursing degree from Fort Dodge Community College. She lived in Des Moines from 1974 until 1979, when she moved to Ames. She was employed as a registered nurse at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, and received her B.S. degree in nursing from Iowa State University in 1987.

She married Douglas R. Long in 1948. She later married Donald L. Book on Dec. 1, 1979 at the First United Methodist Church in Ames.

She is survived by her husband, Donald, Ames; two daughters, Deborah A. Long Hatz, Iowa City, and R. Mickal Long Sigel, Des Moines; a son, Mark Douglas Long, Iowa City; four grandchildren; her mother, E. Eunice Withers, Webster City; a brother, Cavanaugh Withers, Readlyn; a sister, Karen Mertz McDowell,, Perry; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Stanley.

Mrs. Book was a member of the United Methodist Church Women, of which she was a past president and past district officer; the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was past worthy matron of O.E.S. 148 in Webster City; and was a past mother advisor for Rainbow Girls.

Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Ames, the American Cancer Society or Homeward Hospice of Ames.
