John G. Raines, 69, Peru, died Sept. 19, 1993 at the Illinois Valley Community Hospital. A memorial service was held Monday at Grace United Methodist Church in Peru. Arrangements were made by the Mueller Funeral Home, Peru.

John G. Raines, son of John Herman and Anita Grace (Gilbert) Raines, was born Jan. 11, 1924 in Waterloo.

On Dec. 24, 1949 he married Shirley Fry in Vinton. He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II. He was a graduate of Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and attained his master's degree in Greeley, Colo. He taught business for three years in Webster City and for one year in Nemaha. He worked as an accountant at Arrow-Acme Co. in Webster City, Buske Corp. in Pocahontas, Perfex Corp. in Vinton and Bumper to Bumper in Belle Plaine. For the past six years, he and his wife managed the Motel 6 in Peru.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, David of Orient, Jeffrey of Burlington, Wis. and Steven of Houston, Texas; daughter, Nancy Zimple of Conrad; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson; and sisters, Barbara Walker of Granada Hills, Calif. and Peg Selbig of Pacific Grove, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Thomas, in infancy.

He was a former mayor of Webster City and a member of Grace United Methodist Church, LaSalle.
