Funeral services for J. Vernon Westwick, 78, will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Paul's Lutheran church in Williams with the Rev. Lynn Luthard officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Grove Cemetery near Williams.

Military services will be held at the graveside by the Williams American Legion post. The body will lie in state at the Surls-Grupe funeral chapel until 11 a.m. Saturday when it will be taken to the church.

Mr. Westwick died Wednesday night at Mary Greeley hospital in Ames.

J. Vernon Westwick, son of Enoch and Tomine Tjensvold Westwick, was born April 14, 1897 at Millington, Ill. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1902 and the family settled on a farm in the Rose Grove area.

He was confirmed in the Rose Grove Lutheran church.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

On June 24, 1920 he was married to Gladys Bottorff at Webster City and the couple farmed for 13 years in the Rose Grove area, then moved to Williams in 1933. He had been employed with the road maintenance department for Hamilton county until retiring in 1962.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church and 50-year member of the American Legion Post.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Doyle (Lenore) Kelso, Ames, Mrs. Robert (Arlene) Hamilton of Iowa Falls, and Mrs. Paul (Harriett) Walz of Carroll; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Mrs. Orena Clauson of Strawberry Point and Mrs. Esther Enockson of Armstrong.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter; one sister; a brother Jacob and two infant daughters.
