Richard H. Helmers, 74, of Webster City, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home, with Rev. Allen Henderson, officiating. Burial will be in the Colfax Township Cemetery, south of Vincent. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #491 of Duncombe.

Richard Henry Helmers, son of John and Reaka Helmers Helmers, was born November 30, 1929 at Bode, Iowa. He attended Bode Public School. During the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Air Force in construction at Okinawa and Korea. On August 27, 1953 he married Ethel Margaret Byson at Algona. Following his discharge, the couple resided at Algona. He worked with sewer construction in various locations in Iowa. In 1963, they moved to an acreage southeast of Vincent. He worked at Land O Lakes, retiring in 1993. In 1995, they moved to Webster City. Mrs. Helmers died April 10, 2000. He continued to reside at Webster City.

Mr. Helmers is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, David and Judy Helmers of Webster City, Rick and Eileen Helmers and Brian Helmers, all of Fort Dodge, daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Darrell Rude of Polk City, 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, sisters and brother-in-law, Mary and Bob Carlson of Nisswa, Mn., Cassie Wilshusen of Fort Dodge, several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Pete Helmers.

He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Fort Dodge, American Legion Post #491 of Duncombe, Fort Dodge Moose Lodge and Fort Dodge Senior Citizen Club.
