Grace Smotherman, age 79, Jewell, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell with Rev. Gerald F. Sawyer to officiate. Burial of her ashes will follow at Homewood Cemetery in Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Jewell Fire and Rescue Department.

Grace Evelyn Caudle was born Oct. 15, 1920 in Ellsworth. She grew up in Hamilton County, attending school in Blairsburg and graduating from Jewell High School in 1938. She then went to the Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City, graduating in 1941. She was a veteran of WW II, serving at Pearl Harbor as a nurse in the U.S. Navy where she attained the rank of lieutenant. After the war she returned to Jewell, working as a nurse at hospitals in Jewell, Story City, Webster City and Ames. She also owned and operated the Coffee Cup Cafe in Jewell for 10 years. Prior to retiring, she worked at Butler Manufacturing in Story City for eight years.

She is survived by her son, Lucky Smotherman and his wife Delores, Webster City; two grandsons, Travis Knight and his wife Peggi, Ames, and Troy Smotherman and his wife Keasha, Earlham; a great granddaughter, Sydney Knight; two sisters, Marian "Mickey" McIllvenna, Mesa, AZ and Bonnie Barrett, Mountain Home, AK.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Laurence Raymond Caudle, and a great grandson, Christian Knight. She was a member of the Federated United Church of Christ and the Jewell American Legion Post.
