Melvin L. Howell, 78, of Blairsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003 at the Wright Medical Center at Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Foster Funeral Home, with Rev. Howard Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the Blairsburg Cemetery, north of Blairsburg. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and prior to the service on Wednesday.

Melvin Luverne Howell, son of Arthur and Mae Scott Howell, was born Sept. 27, 1924 on a farm northwest of Blairsburg. He attended Wall Lake Center No. 5 rural school. On Feb. 4, 1945 he married Josephine Borel at the Hampton Lutheran Church. The couple farmed northwest of Blairsburg. He operated a crop farm but his main interest was in dairy operations. He had also done custom baling. He retired from crop farming in 1986 and from the dairy business in 2001.

Mr. Howell is survived by his wife, Josephine (Jo), sons and daughter-in-law, Larry Howell of Cedar Rapids, Daryl Howell and Gaye Wiekierak of Indianola.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

His moments of enjoyment included - reading Louis LaMoor and Zane Grey books; western movies, especially John Wayne movies; major league baseball, college basketball and wrestling; country music; dairy sales and visiting with other dairymen and fishing at his farm pond.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Wright County Hospice.
